Admissions

The MSPO program operates on a Fall-only annual admissions cycle. Complete applications and all supporting documents for Fall 2010 MUST BE RECEIVED BY MARCH 5, 2010*. Application materials and information are available at the graduate school applications site. Scroll down to the College of Sciences and select "Prosthetics and Orthotics."

The MSPO program at Georgia Tech selects applicants for admission based on:

While you are enrolled as an undergraduate, you may be able to “CLEP” some prerequisite course requirements in order to get credit. (Students should consider advanced placement, such as the College Level Examination Placement [CLEP] testing whenever possible).

In addition to completing a general graduate application, MSPO applicants will be required to provide GRE scores (and TOEFL scores for international applicants), verification of an accredited Bachelor's degree, and transcripts of completed coursework. Please see the Prerequisites page for coursework required prior to entering the MSPO program.

General Admissions Standards

Undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA):

Generally a 3.0 cumulative average is the minimum. A cumulative average GPA higher than 3.0 is recommended.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Scores:

No minimum GRE scores have been established for applicants, although students admitted to the MSPO program had competitive scores.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):

Georgia Tech dictates a minimum score of 213 for the computer version of the test, 550 for the paper version of the test or 79 for the internet version of the test. International students previously accepted to the MSPO program had an average TOEFL score of 250 on the computer based test.

Gauging the Strength of Your Application

Each year, the MSPO program has encountered applicants with competitive credentials. In order for applicants to the MSPO program to gauge their own cumulative grade point average (GPA) and graduate record exam (GRE) scores, we have provided average values of previous incoming classes of students accepted into the MSPO program for the years 2002 to 2009. (Note: admission to the MSPO program is not solely based on GPA and GRE scores; it also includes letters of recommendation, application essay and the student’s background and knowledge of the profession of prosthetics and orthotics).

What Do the GRE Scores Mean?

Three scores are reported on the GRE General Test:

The GRE General Test scores provide a common measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid the MSPO selection committee in evaluating grades, letters of recommendation and other areas of the student’s application.

Ways to Enhance Your Application to the MSPO Program

    • Visit the campus and the MSPO Program! A face to face visit with the faculty, staff, and students is a great way to get to know the campus and our program. At the same time, this is the only way for us to meet you. Since we do not require interviews as part of the admissions process, this is your opportunity to present yourself in a way that we may not be able to ascertain through the online application.
    • Gain exposure to the field of orthotics and prosthetics by volunteering or interning at a hospital, clinical rehabilitation facility, clinical orthotics and prosthetics facility, or a research facility. To locate an orthotics or prosthetics clinical care facility near you for job shadowing, visit the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc. website. The site contains a search engine to locate a practitioner in your area.
    • Become familiar/comfortable with Microsoft Windows software.
    • Enroll in art/drawing/sculpture courses.
    • Become familiar with the use of power tools.
